Film Industry Research: Analysis of film Institution: Film4

As one of the market leaders in the distribution of social realism media, Film4 has acquired a substantial fanbase built purely on it's reputational ethos of consistently being able to produce and successfully finance on multiple occasions, film productions which are perhaps lacking in budget but are close to the top of the film chain in terms of their directorial quality and the standard of filmmaking exhibited in the productions.

Background
Film4 is most probably known for it's multitude of Social Realism productions that it helps to budget and successfully finance year on year, having garnered a reputation for turning isolated "arts" based films with low budgetary expenditure limitations into bug hitters on the playing field of the global cinema.  However, it is important to note that this reputation has not ambushed the world of media by storm. Before it's highly empowered status came about in the world of cinema it started life as the small bright spark and subsequent brainchild of founders Channel Four Broadcasting Corporation assuming it's position as part of the family of services that make up the Channel 4 group. It was founded in 1982. Now it is a free to air channel as well as providing financial backing to film production companies requiring it's assistance. Currently, the studio finances around 20 independent films a year.

Successful ventures
Amongst many others, Film4 was one of the financial backers to social realism film Trainspotting, a film released back in 1996 As well as perhaps defining the career of director Danny Boyle, the film also made household names of principal cast members such as Ewan McGregor and Jonny Lee Miller, who through the release of the film were able to springboard their newfound careers into  very profitable ones. Once in the public domain, the film was a major success; from a budget of £1,550,000 it took at the global box office a staggering $72million, showing to the world just what a small budgeted film was capable of. As Trainspotting shares consistent values with that of our own feature film "Old Habits Die Hard" including extensive violence and showcasing the gritty and harsh realities of an urban settlement suppressed in it's cultural and diverse expansion through the brute force and oppression caused by the hard-line recreational use of drugs, we feel that our own production bears striking similarities and resemblance to that of the ever popular film Trainspotting.  As such feel that Film4 would, if our film were to actually commence production, be an ideal distributor in ensuring our production received good exposure to our wider targeted demographic.
