Soundtrack, is without a doubt, one of the most important elements of a film; let me explain why.
Soundtrack is an element of the film trailer that, coupled with the visual spectacle that a trailer offers as part of it's attempts to make an impact on consumers, dramatically aids the appeal of a respective film. Soundtrack is in every sense, as important as the visual angles and multi million pound special effects expenditure used on a film as without sound, no story is ever able to be told and the director's ambition and ultimate vision would be unsuccessfully fulfilled. Sound is the language that allows the audience to make sense of the visual images and stimulus' presented to them giving the desired effect that the director ultimately is aiming for and hoping to achieve. Alternatively, sound guides the audience down the path of which emotions and feelings the film is promoting and through the trailer it should become immediately apparent as to whom the film is aiming to target. The soundtrack to a film trailer, be it dialogue, music, diegetic or non diegetic sound are all elements of a trailer's soundtrack that dictate the mood and appropriate tone of the film trailer. I believe this becomes especially evident and clearly apparent upon reviewing an abridged One Direction music video that has been turned from a visual accompaniment of a modern- classic love ballad pop song from a reputable and hugely successful boy-band into a sinister, stirring and haunting horror video. Further to this, is the fact that playing a trailer without sound offers up, unsurprisingly, an altogether different and widely varied viewing experience to one that is normally expected and appreciated by the accustomed viewer. With the absence of sound the trailer begins to manifest and take hold of an entirely new viewing angle for an audience. With sound not being present, the viewer is left with just the visual images and stimulus' of the screen to guide them and as a consequence part of the intended storytelling is lost with the absence of sound becoming noticeable.
In conclusion, Soundtrack is one of the many tools that effectively enables directors to tell their story to the viewer to great effect, as it is in the absence of sound that the meaning and the translation of emotion from a cinematic piece can be irretrievably lost as, the soundtrack of a motion picture carries with it the emotions of a film production.
