In order to successfully reflect and complement the dark mood of our film trailer, a social realism focussing on the harmful effects of recreational drug use, our costumes will be dark and foreboding and sinister in order to reflect the dark mood we are hoping to achieve from our trailer. The costume forms part of the mise en scene of the film trailer and we are aiming to form a dark and sinister atmosphere from our trailer. To replicate an everyday normal social situation our costume will be minimal and reflect modern fashion trends. As our film project is a trailer, costume will be a constantly changing factor throughout the piece. In order to maintain the genre conventions, our costumes will seem to the viewer to be rugged, casual clothing of the working classes to effectively echo the deprived economic well-being and crippling financial status of those in positions of the working class.
Despite this, however, we are keen to convey in our costume, symbols relating to the character's personalities, all of which contain realistic flaws to effectively represent "real" people as closely and effectively as possible. For example, Toby to reflect his gnawing habit of his addiction slowly ebbing away at him will gradually, as the trailer develops, have his clothing changed to a darker and more sinister attire to reflect his changing habits.
Similarly, with a character like Vincent, the antagonistic figure of the trailer, his clothing will remain dark and foreboding throughout the duration of the trailer. In addition to this we will attempt to make the character seem a formidable force by making his clothes appear to be ragged by marking them up with dirt to create the impression of his appearing accustomed to surrounding himself with a hard, urban environment attributes typically associated with the genre of the Social Realism film.
